In a significant boost to healthcare infrastructure in Bihar, the Government of India has approved an additional ₹700 crore for the development of AIIMS Darbhanga, further accelerating the progress of the long-awaited project. The approval, granted during a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 25, 2026, comes over and above the previously sanctioned ₹1,264 crore, taking the total estimated project cost to nearly ₹1,964 crore.
The enhanced financial allocation is expected to fast-track construction activities and address earlier execution challenges, providing fresh momentum to the project. Once completed, AIIMS Darbhanga is set to emerge as a major hub for advanced medical care, education, and research, catering not only to Bihar but also to neighboring states, particularly the underserved Mithila region.
The institute is being developed as a comprehensive healthcare and medical education facility, with plans to include a super-specialty hospital, medical college, and nursing college, significantly strengthening the region’s healthcare delivery system. Officials have emphasized that the Centre is prioritizing the timely completion of the project, with the latest approval expected to remove bottlenecks and expedite implementation.
Welcoming the decision, policymakers and state leaders have described the move as a “historic and pro-public initiative”, highlighting its potential to improve access to affordable, high-quality healthcare, generate employment opportunities, and reduce the burden on existing medical institutions in the region.
AIIMS Darbhanga, being developed on a sprawling campus in Bihar, is poised to play a transformative role in bridging critical healthcare gaps, enhancing medical education capacity, and strengthening India’s public health infrastructure under the government’s broader vision of equitable and accessible healthcare for all.
