Aster MIMS Hospital, Calicut often referred to as the pioneers in the field of emergency medicine in India, has added another feather to its hat by launching the first of its kind Indo-UK 2+3-year International Emergency Medicine Training Program, in association with one of the most globally recognized emergency medicine courses at the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, a reputed medical university in England.
Under the aegis of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, the 5-year FRCEM training program is designed, mentored, monitored, and delivered by BAPIO (British Association of Physicians Indian Origin) and BTA (British Training Academy). Aster Hospitals are accredited by the BTA for Indo-UK Training Programs. The program (2+3 years) which is open to MBBS graduates only, constitutes course-related study facilities that are available at Aster Hospitals in India for the initial two years. Post the two years, medical students would have access to district and tertiary hospitals in the UK for the next three years.
Students will receive a FRCEM degree upon completion of their studies. The degree is recognized globally as well as by the NMC (National Medical Commission) of India. The program will further bestow the students with excellent employment opportunities in India and abroad. The candidates will also hold an MBA degree from the University of South Wales in addition to the medical degree which will help them enhance their overall knowledge and explore other career opportunities.
The inauguration ceremony was held at Aster MIMS, Calicut, where Padma Shri Dr. Azad Moopen, Founder Chairman & MD, Aster DM Healthcare officiated the inauguration of the program. Dr. Parag Singhal (Executive Director BTA and Chair of Indo-UK Programmes), Dr. Tamorish Kole (Founder, Course Director), Mr. Farhan Yasin (Regional Director, Aster Oman & Kerala Cluster) Dr. Venugopalan P P (Director & Lead Consultant Emergency Medicine & Programme Director), Dr. Hamsa (Sr Consultant, General Medicine & Whole Time Director), Dr. Abraham Mammen (CMS) and Dr. Ramesh Bhasi (Sr Consultant & Head Rheumatology and Director DNB Programme) were also present during the inauguration.
Prior to the approval of Emergency Medicine by the Medical Council of India in 2009, Aster MIMS Hospital, Calicut had started an international training course for Emergency Medicine in 2007. The first training program was conducted in collaboration with George Washington University, a well-known medical university in the United States. In 2014. when DNB was approved by the National Board of Examinations for Emergency Medicine, Aster Mims was selected as one of the first centres.
