Mumbai, December 02, 2021: Dr. B.K. Misra, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery & Gamma Knife Radiosurgery and Chief of Surgery, P D Hinduja Hospital & MRC, has been elected as the Chairman of World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) Foundation. He is the first neurosurgeon ever from a country other than Europe or America to be bestowed with this position, regarded as the most prestigious one in neurosurgery across the world.

WFNS Foundation promotes the worldwide development of Neurosurgery and is the Foundation of the apex body of all national and continental neurosurgical societies worldwide. The mission of the WFNS is to work together with the member societies to improve worldwide neurosurgical care, training and research to benefit patients. It has 130 member societies, consisting of 5 continental associations, 6 affiliate societies and 119 national neurosurgical societies. It represents 49,000 neurosurgeons worldwide.

On being elected Dr. B.K. Misra, said, “It’s an honour to be elected as the chairman of the WFNS Foundation and it will be my privilege to take forward its mission. Dr. Misra has a long list of “firsts” to his name. P. D. Hinduja Hospital & MRC is the first South Asian hospital to receive a Gamma Knife Radiosurgery Facility under his leadership. He was the first to execute Image-Guided Aneurysm Microsurgery globally and the first in South Asia to perform Gamma Knife Radiosurgery. In India, he was the first neurosurgeon to do Awake Craniotomy for brain tumors. He is a recipient of the Dr. B C Roy National Award as Eminent Person of the Year and also the only Indian to have received the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) International Lifetime Recognition Award in 2020. Dr. Misra is currently the Honorary President of Asian Australasian Society of Neurological Surgeons (AASNS), and the President of the World Federation of Skull Base Surgery Societies.
