Drone logistics startup Airbound and leading hospital network Narayana Health have successfully completed over 700 drone-based diagnostic sample deliveries, marking a significant milestone in the use of unmanned aerial systems for healthcare logistics in India.

The initiative, which leverages drone technology to transport critical diagnostic samples between healthcare facilities and laboratories, has demonstrated the potential to reduce turnaround times, improve efficiency, and enhance access to timely diagnostics, particularly in areas facing logistical challenges.

Following the success of the pilot phase, the two organisations have announced plans to expand operations to Bengaluru and Kolkata, aiming to scale the deployment of drone-enabled medical logistics across major urban centres.

The drone delivery model is designed to address key bottlenecks in traditional healthcare logistics, including traffic congestion, delays in sample transportation, and limited access in hard-to-reach locations. By enabling faster movement of blood samples, pathology specimens, and other critical materials, the solution supports quicker diagnosis and more efficient clinical decision-making.

Officials from Narayana Health highlighted that integrating drone logistics into healthcare operations aligns with the broader shift toward technology-driven, patient-centric care models, where speed and accuracy are critical. The initiative is also expected to support emergency response scenarios and improve service delivery in remote or underserved regions.
