13-year-old boy with a rare cancerous tumor in his hip becomes pain-free after a year

  • Successful treatment of patient through the minimally invasive procedure with a CT scan
  • Cancer tumor in the hip is a very rare case in children
  • Approximately 10% of people worldwide experience this problem

Mumbai: Doctors removed a rare tumor from a 13-year-old boy’s left hip through a minimally invasive procedure using a CT scan. The surgery was performed at Zynova Shalbi Multispeciality Hospital in Mumbai. After surgery, the boy got much-needed relief from the severe pain and now he has been discharged from the hospital. This is the first CT scan-guided orthopedic procedure successfully performed at this hospital.

Zynova Shalby Multi-Speciality  Hospitals efficient team consisting of Dr Srisanat Rao, Hip and Knee Specialist Surgeon, Paediatric Orthopedic Dr. Chintan Doshi, Radiologist Dr. Shilpa Joshi, Anaesthetist Vaishali Shende performed the uneventful procedure.

Ayush Shingote, a resident of Ghatkopar, suddenly encountered  severe pain in his left leg. He consulted the local doctor for treatment but his condition didn’t improve. As the pain became excruciating, he had to depend on other family members to perform his daily activities. His health deteriorated further and his  parents immediately admitted him to Zynova Shalby Multi-Speciality  Hospitals.

Dr Srisanat Rao, Hip and Knee Specialist Surgeon, Zynova Shalby Multi-Speciality Hospitals said, “When the child was brought to the hospital for treatment, he was suffering from pain in his left hip. A CT scan and MRI revealed a cancerous tumor in the boy’s hip. In such a situation, it is necessary to remove the tumor by surgery without any delay. The child was given spinal anaesthesia and the cancerous tumor was removed by a minimally invasive procedure through a CT scan. After this surgery, the child is pain-free and he has been discharged from the Hospital.

Dr. Rao added,” Osteoid osteoma is a benign tumor of bone and is extremely painful for a long period of time. Surgery is the only option. In the old traditional method, the surgery is done by making a 5 mm incision in the leg. But this can weaken the bone and lead to chronic diseases. As this child was very young, this surgery would have affected his physical development. So it was decided to do this surgery through a CT scan. In this procedure, a small incision is made to remove the cancerous tumor. Due to this, the patient also recovers quickly. The success rate of this surgery is 95 percent and the chance of recurrence of cancer is less.”

The age-old conventional method is to do bone curettage and take out a part of the normal bone along with the pathological bone thus sacrificing a lot of bone and surrounding soft tissues in the process. This CT-guided technique is very precise and minimally invasive. The incision is just a stab incision less than 5mm for the drill to enter. And CT guidance helps to drill out the complete pathological nidus – which is the actual cause of severe pain”, said Dr Chintan Doshi, Paediatric Orthopedic, Zynova Shalby Multi-Speciality  Hospitals

My child suddenly started experiencing extreme pain in his left hip. In this medical examination, a tumor was diagnosed in the left hip. It was a very difficult case for doctors. I thank the doctors for permanently relieving my son of excruciating pain, ” concluded the child’s mother Swati Shingote.
