FSSAI Tightens Action on Packaged Foods as Industry Seeks Clearer Rules for Labelling and Emerging Ingredients

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has intensified its regulatory scrutiny of packaged food manufacturers, prompting the industry to seek greater clarity on food definitions, labelling norms and standards for emerging ingredients. The move is part of the regulator’s broader efforts to strengthen consumer protection and improve transparency in the food sector.
In recent months, FSSAI has stepped up enforcement against misleading claims, inaccurate front of pack labelling and non compliance with food safety regulations. The authority has issued multiple notices to food business operators, reinforcing its focus on ensuring that product labels accurately reflect ingredients and nutritional content.
Industry representatives have welcomed stricter enforcement but said the absence of clear definitions for novel ingredients, functional foods and health related claims creates regulatory uncertainty for manufacturers. They have urged the regulator to update existing standards in line with evolving food technologies and changing consumer preferences.
To address these concerns, FSSAI has restructured its scientific panels to strengthen evidence-based decision making and accelerate the development of science backed food standards. The revamped expert panels are expected to review regulations, establish clearer definitions and provide guidance on emerging food categories, enabling greater regulatory consistency while safeguarding consumer interests.
Established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, FSSAI is responsible for regulating the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import of food products in India. The authority has increasingly focused on improving food quality, combating misleading marketing practices and promoting informed consumer choices.
Healthcare and food industry experts believe that clear, scienc based regulations will benefit both consumers and manufacturers by improving compliance, encouraging innovation and strengthening trust in packaged food products. They added that transparent standards are essential as India’s processed food and quick commerce sectors continue to expand rapidly.
