Industrialist Gautam Adani has announced a major healthcare initiative aimed at strengthening rural eye care services in India with the launch of a ₹150 crore vision care project in Bihar, alongside plans for a broader ₹500 crore nationwide expansion programme focused on accessible ophthalmic healthcare, training, and preventive eye treatment.

The initiative will establish the Adani Centre for Eye (ACE) and Adani Training in Ophthalmic Medicine (ATOM) in Mastichak, Bihar, creating an integrated ecosystem for rural eye treatment, specialist training, vision screening, and advanced ophthalmic services. The project is being positioned as one of the largest private rural vision care investments in eastern India.

According to officials associated with the programme, the Bihar facility will focus on affordable and accessible eye care services for underserved rural populations, particularly addressing preventable blindness, cataract treatment, diabetic retinopathy, refractive errors, and pediatric eye disorders.
The initiative comes at a critical time as India continues to face a significant eye healthcare burden.

According to national health estimates, nearly 34 million Indians suffer from blindness or visual impairment, while cataracts account for approximately 66% of blindness cases in the country. Rural populations remain disproportionately affected due to limited access to specialist ophthalmic services and screening facilities.

The ACE and ATOM centres are expected to include advanced ophthalmology units, surgical theatres, diagnostic facilities, tele ophthalmology services, and specialized training programmes for eye care professionals, technicians, and rural healthcare workers.

Under the larger ₹500 crore expansion strategy, the Adani Group plans to scale similar vision care and ophthalmic training infrastructure across multiple states over the coming years, supporting India’s broader public health goals for preventable blindness reduction and accessible healthcare delivery.

Healthcare experts believe the initiative could significantly strengthen rural ophthalmic infrastructure, especially in states with limited specialist availability and high untreated vision impairment rates. India currently requires thousands of additional ophthalmologists and trained vision technicians to meet growing healthcare demand across rural and semi urban regions.

The announcement further reflects increasing private sector participation in healthcare infrastructure development, preventive healthcare programmes, and specialized medical training initiatives aimed at improving healthcare accessibility across underserved communities in India.
