GE HealthCare has secured the CE Mark for its MINItrace Magni cyclotron and expanded its PETtrace Solid Target Platform to support the production of Copper-64 (⁶⁴Cu). The developments aim to strengthen local radioisotope production, expand positron emission tomography (PET) imaging capabilities and support research into emerging radiopharmaceuticals.

MINItrace Magni features a compact, self-shielded design and automated operation, helping healthcare providers establish or expand in-house production of radioisotopes used in PET tracers. The system is designed to produce four radioisotopes: Fluorine-18 (¹⁸F), Carbon-11 (¹¹C), Oxygen-15 (¹⁵O) and Nitrogen-13 (¹³N).

The cyclotron incorporates an intuitive user interface and a three-click workflow designed to simplify routine production steps. Automated functions, including auto-tuning, help prepare the cyclotron and targets, tune the beam and manage target irradiation. When integrated with GE HealthCare’s TRACERcenter Solutions, the system can support a broader radiopharmacy workflow tailored to an institution’s clinical and operational requirements.

The CE Mark represents an important regulatory milestone for the system in Europe. Local radioisotope production is particularly relevant to PET imaging because many radioisotopes have short half-lives, making proximity between production facilities and imaging centres an important factor in supply planning. In-house production can help healthcare providers manage supply schedules and reduce dependence on external production and transportation.

In a parallel development, GE HealthCare has extended the PETtrace Solid Target Platform beyond Gallium-68, introduced in 2022, and Zirconium-89, made available in early 2026, by adding Copper-64 production capability.

Copper-64 is used in PET imaging and is being investigated alongside Copper-67 as a potential diagnostic and therapeutic pair in theranostics. This approach links molecular imaging with targeted radionuclide therapy. Research is evaluating Copper-64-labelled compounds in areas including prostate cancer and HER2-positive breast cancer; these investigational applications should not be interpreted as approved treatments.

The developments build on GE HealthCare’s more than 40 years of experience in cyclotron and PET radiopharmacy technologies. By combining local isotope production with a broader radiopharmacy workflow, the company aims to help healthcare institutions support established molecular imaging services while preparing for emerging clinical and research applications.

The announcement was made ahead of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine’s 2026 Annual Meeting, scheduled for October 17-21 in Vienna, Austria.
