The National Health Authority (NHA) has partnered with Google to leverage artificial intelligence technologies in the newly launched Aarogya Setu 2.0 platform, strengthening India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for healthcare and advancing the country’s vision of a connected, interoperable and citizen centric digital health ecosystem.
The collaboration forms part of Google’s broader partnership with the NHA to support the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) and enhance digital healthcare access across India. The upgraded Aarogya Setu 2.0 application now functions as a comprehensive personal health record platform, enabling citizens to create and manage their Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA), access digital health records and utilize digital healthcare services through a single interface.
As part of the partnership, Google has also open-sourced its Medical Data Toolkit, allowing healthcare organizations, developers and institutions to digitize, structure and standardize legacy medical records free of cost. The toolkit is designed to support interoperability requirements under India’s digital health framework while facilitating the transition from paper based to digital health records.
According to the National Health Authority, the initiative aims to improve healthcare accessibility, strengthen digital health infrastructure and accelerate the adoption of interoperable health data systems nationwide. The Medical Data Toolkit is expected to assist hospitals and healthcare providers in converting unstructured clinical records into standardized digital formats aligned with India’s healthcare data standards.
India’s digital health ecosystem has witnessed significant growth under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. Official data indicate that more than 80 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA) have been created, while over 100 crore digital health records have been linked across the country. In addition, the government’s telemedicine platform eSanjeevani has facilitated more than 40 crore consultations, highlighting the rapid adoption of digital healthcare services.
Healthcare experts believe that artificial intelligence can play a transformative role in healthcare by improving clinical workflows, enhancing interoperability and enabling more efficient healthcare delivery. AI-powered tools for medical data standardization and clinical information management are increasingly being viewed as critical components of next generation healthcare systems.
The collaboration between Google and the NHA also reflects the growing importance of public-private partnerships in strengthening digital public infrastructure. Experts note that open source healthcare technologies can accelerate innovation, reduce implementation costs and improve accessibility, particularly in resource constrained settings.
The integration of Google AI technologies into Aarogya Setu 2.0 underscores India’s continued efforts to build one of the world’s largest digital health ecosystems. As the country expands its digital public infrastructure, initiatives focused on interoperability, artificial intelligence and standardized health data management are expected to play a key role in improving healthcare access and patient outcomes.
