Comprehensive Vaccination Campaigns Underway Nationwide

The Government of India is steadfast in its commitment to eradicating Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) by 2030, implementing a series of robust measures to safeguard the nation’s livestock and bolster the agricultural economy.

National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP)

Launched in September 2019, the National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP) is a flagship initiative aimed at controlling and ultimately eradicating FMD and Brucellosis in livestock. With a total outlay of ₹13,343 crore for five years (2019-20 to 2023-24), the programme targets 100% vaccination coverage for cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, and pig populations against FMD, and 100% vaccination of bovine female calves aged 4-8 months against Brucellosis.

Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP)

In 2022, the Government introduced the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP), a Central Sector Scheme implemented across all States and Union Territories. The programme focuses on prophylactic vaccination against key animal diseases, capacity building of veterinary services, disease surveillance, and strengthening veterinary infrastructure.

Recent Achievements in Vaccination Efforts

Under the LHDCP, significant progress has been made in vaccinating livestock against FMD. During the last round, more than 24.18 crore cattle and buffaloes were vaccinated nationwide. In the current round, over 4.89 crore cattle and buffaloes have been vaccinated to date.

Economic Impact of FMD

FMD is a highly contagious viral disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals, leading to severe economic losses due to decreased productivity, trade restrictions, and increased mortality. The Government’s comprehensive vaccination strategy aims to mitigate these losses, enhance domestic production, and boost exports of livestock products.

Ministerial Statement

The Honorable Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Shri Parshottam Rupala, stated, “The Government is unwavering in its mission to eradicate Foot and Mouth Disease by 2030. Through sustained vaccination campaigns and the strengthening of veterinary infrastructure, we are committed to protecting our livestock and supporting the livelihoods of millions of farmers across the country.”

Future Outlook

The Government continues to prioritize animal health as a critical component of the agricultural sector, ensuring food security and economic stability. Ongoing efforts include enhancing disease surveillance, expanding vaccination coverage, and fostering collaboration with international organizations to achieve the goal of FMD eradication by 2030.
