New Delhi: Union Health Minister J P Nadda is set to lay the foundation stone for a dedicated centre for high-altitude medicine and public health research in Keylong, Himachal Pradesh. The initiative aims to strengthen medical research, improve healthcare preparedness and address the health challenges faced by people living in mountainous and remote regions.

The proposed facility, to be established by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), will focus on understanding health conditions associated with high elevations, harsh weather, geographical isolation and changing climatic patterns. The centre is expected to support scientific studies and develop evidence-based approaches to healthcare delivery in the Himalayan region.

Situated in the Lahaul and Spiti district, the centre is planned as a specialised institution for high-altitude healthcare research. It will provide opportunities for multidisciplinary investigations involving mountain communities, including tribal populations, whose health needs can be influenced by environmental conditions, limited healthcare access and extreme temperatures.

The research agenda will cover several important areas, including high-altitude physiology, acclimatisation, mountain medicine, climate-related illnesses, infectious diseases and non-communicable conditions. Maternal and child health, nutrition, mental well-being, environmental health, occupational health and disaster medicine will also form part of the centre’s broader research priorities.

In addition to scientific research, the facility is expected to examine technology-driven healthcare solutions for remote communities. Potential areas of work include digital health services, telemedicine, drone-supported medical supply delivery and real-time public health monitoring. These approaches could help healthcare providers reach underserved populations and strengthen access to essential medical services in difficult terrain.

The centre is also expected to support long-term field research into the effects of climate change, environmental exposure and altitude on human health. Findings from these studies could contribute to better disease prevention strategies, improved disaster response and more effective healthcare planning for vulnerable mountain populations.

By bringing specialised research and public health initiatives closer to the Himalayan region, the proposed ICMR centre could play an important role in advancing high-altitude medicine and strengthening climate-resilient healthcare systems in India.
