A team led by Dr. ChandraVeer Singh, Consultant Otorhinolaryngologist, and Head & Neck OncoSurgeon, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road successfully managed a 25-year-old lady with Sensorineural hearing loss. The patient has regained her hearing after undergoing PRP from Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road.
Patient Dr Gupta, a resident of Mumbai was 5 years old when she suddenly stopped hearing from her right ear. Her family consulted various doctors in Mumbai who failed to provide her much-needed relief. She was detected with profound sensorineural hearing loss. The only treatment options available back then were Cochlear implants and hearing aids. Her hearing capacity gradually reduced over the years. The patient managed all these years in school and college with her left ear. She is now working as a dental surgeon. She approached Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road for Intratympanic PRP injection treatment.
Dr. Chandra Veer Singh, Consultant Otorhinolaryngologist, and Head and Neck Onco Surgeon, Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road said, “On arrival in May 2023 Dr Gupta was suffering with profound sensory neural hearing loss of her right ear. BERA and PTA test was done to confirm the sensory neural hearing loss of the right ear, that is 120 decibels sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL), which manifests as a swift and significant decline in auditory perception, predominantly affecting one ear. This occurrence may transpire abruptly or unfold gradually over the course of several days, resulting in a progressive diminishment of sound clarity and intensity. Further BERA and PTA tests were done before and after treatment, the part about 3 intratympanic injections of PRP. Injection of PRP was given on an OPD basis. After 1st PRP injection now her hearing is improved by 30 decibels and she can hear up to 90 decibels. She doesn’t want any visible device for her right ear. So, injection PRP was appropriate for her. The hearing will keep improving due to the regeneration of hair cells. The USP of this case is a permanent and long-lasting hearing improvement. Intratympanic PRP injection is a very good option for sensory neural hearing loss. Intratympanic PRP injection is given a long-lasting and complete cure and there is no stigma of wearing hearing aids. If not treated, such patients with the bilateral profound sensory neural hearing loss at the right time, it could have led to complications such as loss of hearing with speech discrimination.”
“Sensory neural hearing loss wreaked havoc in my life, turning it upside down in the blink of an eye. One moment I was immersed in the sounds of laughter and conversation, and the next, a profound silence engulfed me, leaving me feeling lost and isolated. The impact was far-reaching, not only affecting my ability to communicate and understand others but also taking a toll on my emotional well-being. The experience taught me that hearing loss is so much more than just a physical impairment. It is deeply a personal challenge that can reshape one’s identity. As I navigated through daily life with newfound difficulty, I began to realize how much we rely on our sense of hearing for connection and engagement with the world around us. Simple tasks like enjoying music became arduous struggles for comprehension. It forced me to reevaluate my priorities, seeking alternative methods of communication. Undeniably, sudden hearing loss had been an unwelcome disruption in my life. Yet, amidst all the chaos it brought about, there have been unexpected moments of growth and resilience. I thank the doctors for helping me to restore my hearing. I am happy now and looking forward to improving my hearing capacity further and improving my quality of life,” concluded Dr Gupta, patient.
