Quick response from highly qualified and trained team of Doctors at BLK Super Speciality Hospital to availability of heart by a Jaipur donor and led to a successful life-saving transplant on a government employee from Kanauni village of Ghaziabad district in Uttar Pradesh. The 56-year -old patient, was suffering from an incurable condition called dilated cardiomyopathy, he had reached a stage where he could not perform his routine day to day activities without getting breathless and had multiple episodes of sudden loss of consciousness. It was fortunate that he recovered from these episodes of illnesses as any one of these could have been fatal for the patient looking at his precarious clinical condition. On humanitarian grounds, the transplant was conducted without any monetary consideration as the receiver belongs to lower income group. After a successful transplant, the patient is recovering well. He has two sons and two daughters.
This heart transplant at BLK Super Speciality Hospital was made possible when a 30-year-old male, a resident of Jaipur, was declared brain dead at SMS Hospital in Jaipur after being met with an accident couple of days back. Kidneys and eyes were transplanted at SMS Hospital, Jaipur. Liver and Heart were sent to Delhi.
As soon as NOTTO informed about the donor and availability of heart, a team of doctors led by Dr Ajay Kaul Chairman and HOD CTVS, BLK Super Speciality Hospital immediately swung into action and left for Jaipur by an by an early morning flight on April 2nd. Dr. Sushant Srivastava, Senior Consultant and Director, CTVS, Dr. Dheeraj Gandotra, Consultant, Cardiology, Dr.Jasbir Singh Khanuja, Director & HOD, Anaesthesia, harvested the heart yesterday night at Jaipur.
The harvested heart was flown down to Delhi by a 10:05pm flight that landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport at terminal 3 at 10:47pm before time as a special case. A green corridor was created from IGI Airport to BLK Super Speciality Hospital covering a distance of 15 kilometres over 18 minutes at night.
The heart was then transplanted in the wee hours of night by Dr. Ajay Kaul along-with his team.
“The recipient was suffering from heart complications from past few years. The pacemaker was implanted at BLK Super Speciality in July 2017. The patient has had bouts of blackouts and fainting episodes post 4-5 months of the pacemaker. For a better quality of life, Heart Transplant was an ideal option,” explained Dr Ajay Kaul, Chairman & HOD, CTVS, BLK Super Speciality Hospital.
