Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has inaugurated a state of the art 3 Tesla MRI system at the Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialties (AIMSS), Chamiyana, strengthening the state’s advanced diagnostic infrastructure. Alongside the launch, the Chief Minister announced an investment of ₹125 crore to establish fully automated diagnostic laboratories across government medical colleges.

Installed at a cost of approximately ₹23 crore, the 3-Tesla MRI system delivers higher resolution imaging, faster scan times and improved diagnostic accuracy compared to conventional MRI systems. The facility is expected to enhance the diagnosis of complex neurological, cardiac, musculoskeletal and oncological conditions while reducing waiting time for patients.

With the installation, AIMSS Chamiyana has become the second government healthcare institution in Himachal Pradesh, after Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, to be equipped with advanced 3-Tesla MRI technology.

The Chief Minister also announced that the state government will invest ₹125 crore to establish automated laboratories in government medical colleges. The proposed facilities will support fully automated and highly accurate diagnostic testing, improving laboratory efficiency, reducing turnaround time and strengthening clinical decision-making across the public healthcare system.

Healthcare experts welcomed the initiative, noting that investments in advanced imaging and automated laboratory infrastructure are essential for improving early diagnosis, precision medicine and patient outcomes. They added that expanding access to modern diagnostic technologies in government hospitals will reduce dependence on private healthcare facilities while making high quality diagnostics more affordable.

The latest initiatives underscore Himachal Pradesh’s focus on modernising its public healthcare infrastructure through investments in advanced medical technology, diagnostic services and tertiary care, aimed at improving access to quality healthcare across the state.
