Reason for Join profession
Most doctors have a very touching and heart-warming story behind their reason for joining the medical profession but I have to admit mine was a more practical and funny one. I was from a very modest household in Guntur, a city in Andhra Pradesh. In those days it was very rare for people to have anything other than the low wattage light bulbs at home. One thing I observed as a child was that the only place I knew which had a tube light was the doctor’s office. I was fascinated by this fact and decided back then that I wanted to become a doctor.
Jokes apart, my passion for helping people and giving respite for those in need found the perfect home in the medical profession. I strived for 4 years preparing (unknown to my father) for the medical entrance exam while already studying in an Agricultural College. I got entrance into the medical college on my 4th attempt and am glad that I never gave up on my dream!

Early challenges
As I mentioned, I was from a very modest household and had to secretly study for the medical entrance exam while already studying at an Agricultural College where my father taught.
The struggle for getting into the medical stream taught me perseverance.
Another struggle for me was during my training in England. In the early days
I felt low in confidence because I felt that I was sometimes looked down upon by my colleagues because I was from India. But over time, as they got to know about my skill and passion my position in their eyes slowly grew.
Another large challenge for me was shifting base back to India after 10 years in the U.K. It was a very tough decision to make as my wife and children had already settled well back in England. But I was determined from the beginning that I would come back one day and provide my services for my people and so I took the plunge. I am very lucky that my family were so understanding back then.

Professional Highs
I don’t like to beat my own drum but I am happy with the way my career has shaped up. Now, I have the opportunity to treat thousands of patients all over the world and till date my greatest award is the smile on the face of a patient whom I may have brought back onto their feet.
Some other achievements along the way:

Management Thought
Apart from being an Orthopaedic Surgeon and a teacher I also have the extra burden of being an entrepreneur having to manage my chain of hospitals.
But even with such a high pressure responsibility I believe in one management mantra which I always use even in my clinical practice – ‘the best way around a problem is through it’.
I also believe that as a leader you should be as accessible to your staff as possible and that everyone who works with me and for me is part of my extended family.
Healthcare Vision
(Man vs. Machine harmonization)
I believe in the power of human touch, especially in healthcare. No robot or machine can ever replace the comforting power of the hand of the doctor on the patient’s shoulder or the diagnostic capabilities of a doctor’s touch. But at the same time it is imperative to evolve with time and technology. There are so many wonderful creations that have come into existence in recent times and it is important for healthcare providers to evaluate and adopt those machines which can really add value to the patient’s treatment.
Inspiration
My inspirations are many but most importantly all the people who have taught me in my life, both academically and about life. In that aspect my biggest inspirations are my parents. My mother is the one who always believed in me and was a major reason for me becoming a doctor.
I believe that we should always remember and respect those who have taught us and inspired us that is why all the operation theatres at Sunshine Hospitals are named after my teachers and inspirations.
Family details
I am who I am today only because of the constant love and support of my family. My wife, Dr. Bhavani is a gynaecologist and obstetrician and has stood by me through thick and thin. I am blessed to have two wonderful children who are also practising doctors and wonderful human beings – Adarsh and Kavya. And as if God was not kind enough to me already he gave me 2 more gems in the form of my son-in-law and daughter-in-law – Kushal and Harsha. To top all of this off I have recently been blessed with a grandson Arjun, the apple of my eye.
