New Delhi, : India is positioning itself to become a global leader in the pharmaceutical sector, with a strong focus on biosimilars, innovation, and advanced drug development, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda said.

Highlighting the country’s evolving pharmaceutical landscape, the minister emphasized that India is moving beyond its traditional role as a global supplier of generic medicines to become a hub for high-value biologics, biosimilars, and research-driven innovation. This strategic shift is expected to strengthen India’s competitiveness in global markets and expand its footprint in advanced therapeutics.

Nadda noted that the government is actively supporting the sector through policy reforms, infrastructure development, and incentives aimed at boosting research and development. The focus is on creating a robust ecosystem that encourages innovation-led manufacturing, regulatory efficiency, and global quality standards.

Biosimilars, in particular, have emerged as a key growth area, offering cost-effective alternatives to biologic drugs while maintaining similar efficacy and safety profiles. The expansion of this segment is expected to improve patient access to advanced therapies both in India and internationally.

The minister also underscored the importance of public-private collaboration, investment in cutting-edge technologies, and skill development to accelerate growth in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. Initiatives aimed at strengthening clinical research, regulatory frameworks, and manufacturing capabilities are further supporting this vision.

Industry experts believe that India’s growing capabilities in biopharmaceuticals, contract research, and large-scale manufacturing position it well to capitalize on global demand for affordable and high-quality medicines.

The push towards innovation and biosimilars aligns with India’s broader goal of becoming a pharma powerhouse, contributing to global healthcare needs while driving economic growth and job creation.
