King George’s Medical University (KGMU) is poised to significantly enhance its healthcare offerings with the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) unit by the end of March 2025. This advanced facility aims to provide cutting-edge treatment options for patients suffering from hematological disorders such as leukemia, thalassemia, and aplastic anemia.
The upcoming BMT unit, established at a cost of approximately ₹2.75 crore, is funded through the generous contributions of Aditya Birla Capital Foundation and CanKids under their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. The facility will feature an eight-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) equipped with advanced medical technologies, including stem cell collection machines, apheresis machines, and cytotoxic drug infusion systems. A dedicated team comprising hematologists, transplant surgeons, oncologists, and specialized nursing staff will oversee patient care, ensuring adherence to the highest standards of medical excellence.
Traditionally, bone marrow transplants can cost patients between ₹15 to 18 lakh in private healthcare settings. However, KGMU’s new unit is committed to offering these life-saving procedures at a subsidized rate of ₹8 to 10 lakh, making them more accessible to a broader patient population.
Professor Sonia Nityanand, Head of the Department of Hematology at KGMU, emphasized the unit’s significance, stating, “The establishment of this Bone Marrow Transplant unit marks a pivotal advancement in our mission to provide comprehensive and affordable care to patients battling severe blood disorders. This facility will not only enhance our treatment capabilities but also reduce the financial burden on patients and their families.”
The introduction of the BMT unit at KGMU is anticipated to alleviate the patient load on other institutions, such as the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), which currently offers bone marrow transplant services in the region. This expansion will provide patients with more options and reduce waiting times for these critical procedures.
KGMU’s commitment to advancing medical care is further demonstrated by its plans to expand the Department of Clinical Hematology. Future initiatives include the introduction of courses such as DM in Medical Oncology and PhD programs, along with the establishment of a state-of-the-art unit for cellular therapy and bone marrow transplant.
The inauguration of the Bone Marrow Transplant unit is a testament to KGMU’s dedication to providing state-of-the-art medical care and its unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of the community.
