Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a common hormonal disorder affecting millions of women worldwide. Despite its prevalence, PCOS remains widely misunderstood and often undiagnosed. The event was organized to shed light on PCOS, its causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and management to empower women to take control of their health.

PCOS is a condition where one has few, unusual, or very long periods or irregular menstruation. It often results in having too much of a male hormone called androgen. Many small sacs of fluid develop on the ovaries leading to ovulatory dysfunction. They may fail to regularly release eggs. This can manifest inshowing signs like facial acne, facial hair, weight gain, hair loss from the scalp, and irregular periods. Women experience these symptoms even at an early age in their teens. These women can later have difficulty in conception and hence can face issues with pregnancy. It can also lead to insulin resistance in the body which elevates sugar levels and imposes a comorbidity such as diabetes in the body.

Lifestyle modifications like regular exercise and a healthy diet are very important right from a young age. Also, good quality sleep is important to prevent PCOS.

Dr Pooja Mehta, Director & HOD, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Marengo Asia Hospitals Gurugram added, “Most women suffering from PCOS struggle with emotional, psychological, and physical appearance issues. It is advisable that they get help from mental health professionals, support groups, and family and friends to overcome depressive and psychological effects. Sleep plays an important role too for PCOS women. With the increasing screen time that youngsters are spending these days, it puts them at increased risk for PCOS. We need to educate young girls right from school age about what a healthy lifestyle is to prevent or manage PCOS.”

Dr Pallavi Vasal, Director & HOD, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Marengo Asia Hospitals Gurugram says, “As a treatment for PCOS, it is very important to manage weight through a balanced diet, regular exercises, and stress reduction techniques that can help improve insulin sensitivity and alleviate PCOS symptoms. There are medications also prescribed to regulate menstrual cycles and manage androgen levels that lead to unwanted facial hair. However, the first rule is to maintain discipline to be treated for PCOS.”

Ms Neeta Rajwar, Facility Director, Marengo Asia Hospitals Gurugram says, “The team of doctors in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the hospital are clinically excellent in their dealing with patients suffering from PCOS. It is a multi-dimensional approach required to treat patients with PCOS and the doctors strive to bring out the best outcomes to the treatment solutions they apply.”

PCOS is a treatable disorder that requires a disciplined and focused approach by women who can take proactive steps towards better health and a better quality of life. PCOS is acommon cause of infertility amounting to almost 6 – 12% of the population.
