Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda has launched the Unified Health Interface (UHI), a key component of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) aimed at creating an open, interoperable and citizen centric digital healthcare ecosystem. The platform is designed to enable seamless access to healthcare services by connecting patients, healthcare providers and digital health applications through a common framework.
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Unified Health Interface is built on four core principles: interoperability, fair discoverability, verification and open protocols. The initiative seeks to create a level playing field where every verified healthcare provider, regardless of size, geographic location or digital platform, can be discovered and accessed by citizens using any UHI compatible application.
The ministry stated that the UHI framework will facilitate a wide range of digital health services, including doctor consultations, appointment booking, telemedicine services, health record access and other healthcare transactions through interoperable digital platforms. The system is expected to improve accessibility, promote competition and enhance patient choice within India’s healthcare ecosystem.
The launch marks another milestone in India’s rapidly expanding digital health infrastructure. Under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, more than 80 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA) have been created, while over 100 crore digital health records have been linked nationwide. Additionally, the government’s telemedicine platform eSanjeevani has facilitated more than 40 crore consultations, demonstrating the increasing adoption of digital healthcare services across the country.
Healthcare experts believe that open network models such as the Unified Health Interface have the potential to transform healthcare delivery by reducing fragmentation, improving interoperability and expanding access to healthcare services, particularly in underserved regions. The framework is also expected to encourage innovation by enabling startups, hospitals and digital health companies to build interoperable healthcare solutions on a common infrastructure.
The government has emphasized that UHI’s open protocol architecture will promote transparency, enhance healthcare accessibility and strengthen digital public infrastructure for health. Experts note that interoperable healthcare ecosystems can improve continuity of care, reduce administrative inefficiencies and support more effective healthcare delivery.
The launch of the Unified Health Interface reflects India’s broader vision of leveraging digital public infrastructure to achieve universal health coverage and create a more accessible, equitable and patient centric healthcare system. As digital health adoption continues to accelerate, UHI is expected to play a critical role in shaping the future of healthcare delivery in the country.
