The pilot project of the National Digital Health Mission was announced by the prime minister from the ramparts of the Red Fort on August 15, 2020.
“Today is a very important day. The drive to strengthen the health facilities of the country, in the last 7 years, is entering a new phase today. This is not an ordinary phase. This is an extraordinary phase,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, lauding the digital initiatives in the country.

“The Pradhan Mantri Digital Health Mission (PMDHM) is a welcome step by the Government, as it will progress the journey to Universal Health Coverage. It would also enhance transparency in care delivery as well as access to information for all stakeholders, which in turn could help lower the cost to patients.”
Saurabh Kochhar, Founder and CEO, Meddo Health shares his views on PM Modi’s Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission:
“PM Modi is a visionary leader who understands to power of the technology and digitization. Meddo Health congratulates the Indian Government for taking this critical step in transitioning from offline to online and takes pride in being a part of select few having crossed all milestones of Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission Sandbox. Creation of a unique health ID card for each Indian citizen and registry of health facilities and professionals will bring about a huge paradigm shift in the way healthcare is delivered in the country. From ease of access to quality of care, to impact on clinical outcomes, to inclusion of the underprivileged, to stronger governance and accountability, this change will enhance efficiency and transparency in the system. Digitizing records will help patients navigate the complex healthcare terrain with greater easy.
Our healthcare system is designed to push patients towards hospitalization as insurance coverage is designed in a way to only look at only the in-patient hospitalisation segment. OPD care, which makes a huge part of the healthcare system is totally neglected as there is no organized repository of records which may ensure accountability to encourage complete insurance coverage. End to end digitization of health records from e-prescriptions, lab tests and reports, to treatment plans, to outcomes and attached invoicing will change the face of Indian healthcare. It will reduce administrative burden on clinicians, bring about economic efficiencies and reduce treatment costs, encourage clinical knowledge sharing and improve outcomes.
It is imperative for the private healthcare system to join hands with the Government. Meddo works at bridging the gap between doctors and patients by scaling the infrastructure, technology and offering administrative support before and after the consultation to complete a patient and clinician’s journey. Meddo’s efforts in the direction of streamlining primary care via digitisation are in synch with the Government’s vision and will also bring inclusiveness to deepen the penetration of health insurance in the country. In line with the PM’s vision, Meddo has created a network of 200+ completely digital full-service healthcare clinics across Delhi – NCR and Bangalore and have partnered with over 3000 clinicians, 50+ diagnostic labs, to create a one stop destination to ease a patient’s healthcare journey. We have services over 1 Crore happy patients offline and online and digitised over 1.5 Crore prescriptions. Our vision is to launch over 2000 fully digitized clinics across the country regions in next 12-18months to partner the government’s journey of digitization serve the nation.”

With the launch of PM-DHM, India has now a game-changer initiative in place. This initiative has the potential what UIDAI’s Aadhar card has for this nation.
India deserves a robust mechanism for handling healthcare data which could help the patient individually and the country with the huge possibility of uncovering the clinical information nesting inside it. It could be a shot in the arm for our R&D & preventive medicine which currently hasn’t been harnessed for the benefit of our nation. Healthcare services are becoming increasingly tech-enabled and digital health has now the potential to expand across diagnostics, laboratories, drugs, insurance and point of care, among others.
With the initiation of PM-DHM, healthcare delivery will be revolutionised. It would not only help in preventive management but would play a catalytic role in the entire continuum of care from tracking data to robust handling for an epidemic like situation through ensuring timely medical intervention. As a healthcare service provider, we have been introducing tech-enabled services in the management of hospital information systems for patients’ data. Now, people will get a unique digital health ID that will contain all the health records of the person. This move will surely help providers also to provide efficient and effective delivery of services.

“The Ayushman Bharat Digital Health ID for all citizens announced by the Hon. Prime Minister is a very proactive step. This will act as the backbone for the healthcare infrastructure through unified electronic medical records for all Indians. It shall help in data capture and transferability for easy accessibility. I hope this shall be rolled out under block chain technology to ensure data security and confidentiality. Congratulations to Niti Aayog for bringing one’s health records at their fingertips through mobile phones, anywhere, anytime”.
Mr. Abhishek Malhotra, Managing Partner, TMT Law Practice regarding
“This is a welcome move. It will not only give access to basic healthcare infrastructure to all, but is a much needed fillip to make quality healthcare a reality through telemedicine. The seamless interoperability resulting in accessibility of medical history and records regardless of geography will go a long way in changing the future of healthcare in the country. The only concern that would need to be addressed is privacy.”
During the address, PM Modi also praised the CoWIN platform – the government’s centralised digital service provider and records-keeper for COVID-19 vaccination appointments and certificates, declaring “from registration to certification, no system is as massive”. The Prime Minister underlined that India had administered over 86 crore vaccine doses since the inoculation drive began in January, and credited the CoWIN platform with a “big role”.
