Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to dedicate three major healthcare infrastructure projects at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, to the nation on July 17, significantly enhancing the institute’s capacity for specialised treatment, critical care and medical research. The announcement was made by PGIMER Director Dr. Vivek Lal.
The projects include the Advanced Mother and Child Centre, the Advanced Neurosciences Centre and a new Critical Care Block, all aimed at strengthening tertiary healthcare services and improving access to advanced treatment for patients from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Chandigarh and neighbouring states.
According to PGIMER, the new facilities will significantly enhance the institute’s capabilities in maternal and child health, neurosciences, emergency and critical care, while supporting advanced clinical research and medical education. The expansion is expected to improve patient flow, reduce waiting times and increase the availability of specialised healthcare services.
Established in 1962, PGIMER Chandigarh is one of India’s premier tertiary care, teaching and research institutions, catering to millions of patients annually as a major referral centre for northern India. The institute plays a pivotal role in delivering complex medical care, training healthcare professionals and advancing biomedical research.
Healthcare experts said the new infrastructure will strengthen PGIMER’s role in managing high risk pregnancies, neonatal care, neurological disorders and critically ill patients. They noted that expanding super speciality facilities at leading public institutions is essential to meeting the growing demand for advanced healthcare while reducing the burden on existing tertiary care centres.
The inauguration reflects the government’s continued investment in strengthening India’s public healthcare infrastructure through world class medical institutions, with a focus on expanding specialised care, improving patient access and enhancing the country’s medical education and research ecosystem.Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to dedicate three major healthcare infrastructure projects at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, to the nation on July 17, significantly enhancing the institute’s capacity for specialised treatment, critical care and medical research.
