Generally, to remove tumors from the brain, the skull is broken and the surgeons go about 10 centimeters deep from the top to remove them. This causes several complications. To overcome these, endoscopic skull base surgeries have gained prominence in recent times. To raise awareness about these procedures among doctors in the Telugu states, a two-day cadaveric workshop was conducted at Kamineni Hospital in the city. The workshop, held on June 22 and 23 at the Indira Auditorium on the hospital premises, primarily discussed neuroendoscopy surgeries. Over 120 doctors from across the country participated in this event. Professors from renowned hospitals such as PGIs in Delhi and Chandigarh, NIMHANS, and AIIMS attended the workshop.

During the two-day workshop, the attendees were informed about what to do on the operation table and how to learn the procedures. Experts explained how to perform surgeries ranging from basic to advanced levels. Senior faculty from national-level medical education institutions conducted classes in the auditorium and then demonstrated the surgeries on cadavers. In addition, Professer Juan Carlos Fernandez Miranda, Surgical Director, Stanford Braun Tumor, Center from the world-renowned Stanford University attended the meeting via Zoom. Residents, junior doctors, and doctors from various cities and towns in the Telugu states learned the techniques taught by these experts. Among the attendees, most were neurosurgeons, and about 10 ENT surgeons also participated.

“To remove tumors located in the middle part of the brain, the skull typically needs to be broken first to access the tumor from the top. However, through the nose, it is much easier to reach the area where the tumor is located. This method avoids damaging about 10 centimeters of the brain, requiring only about a 2-centimeter cut. This technique is used for treating pituitary tumors and skull base tumors. Previously, one had to go to hospitals like NIMHANS in Bengaluru or AIIMS in Delhi for such surgeries. Now, we can perform these surgeries right here in Hyderabad. Moreover, doctors participating in these conferences can perform these surgeries in 2-tier cities as well, greatly benefiting patients” said Dr. Shighakolli Ramesh, Neuro Surgeon, Kamineni Hospital and the organizing secretary of the conference.

The event was organized by Dr. M.A. Jaleel as the organizing chairman and Dr. Arumulla Sivasai as the treasurer. Key participants included Dr. Gayatri Kamineni, COO of Kamineni Hospital; Dr. Avadhesh Jaiswal, Professor of Neurosurgery at SGPGI Lucknow; Professor from Mumbai’s Bombay Hospitals; Dr. Manas Panigrahi, Professor and Head of Neurosurgery at KIMS Hospital, Hyderabad; Dr. Prakash Nair, Additional Professor at SCTIMST, Trivandrum; Dr. Ramesh Teegala, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Anu Institute of Neuro and Cardiac Sciences, Vijayawada; Dr. S.S. Dandapani, Professor of Neurosurgery at PGIMER Chandigarh; and Dr. Subodh Raju, HOD and Director of Neurosurgery at AIG Hospital, Hyderabad.
