The Ministry of Ayush has issued a public health advisory on heatwave and extreme heat conditions, urging citizens to adopt preventive healthcare measures and traditional wellness practices to protect themselves from heat related illnesses as temperatures continue to rise across several parts of India.
The advisory recommends adequate hydration, consumption of cooling drinks such as coconut water, buttermilk, lemon water, bael sherbet, and sattu, along with avoiding direct sun exposure during peak afternoon hours. Citizens have also been advised to wear light cotton clothing, maintain indoor ventilation, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities between 12 PM and 3 PM.
The Ministry highlighted that vulnerable groups, including children, senior citizens, outdoor workers, and individuals with existing health conditions, remain at higher risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke during prolonged heatwave conditions.
According to India Meteorological Department data, temperatures in several states have crossed 45°C in recent weeks. Government data also indicates that India has recorded more than 8,000 heatstroke and sunstroke related deaths over the past decade, underlining the growing public health risks associated with extreme heat events.
The advisory further emphasizes emergency response awareness, encouraging immediate medical attention in cases of dizziness, fainting, confusion, high fever, or severe dehydration.
The Ministry of Ayush stated that the initiative aims to strengthen preventive healthcare awareness and promote traditional wellness systems as part of India’s broader public health preparedness strategy against climate related health challenges.
