Global pharmaceutical major Roche has announced the opening of its Institute of Human Biology (IHB) in Basel, marking a significant milestone in advancing next-generation drug discovery and development. The state-of-the-art facility, housed in Building 92, is part of Roche’s broader CHF 1.4 billion investment in strengthening its Basel life sciences hub and reinforcing Switzerland’s position as a global innovation center.

The newly inaugurated institute is designed to accommodate up to 250 researchers and will focus on developing advanced human model systems to better understand disease biology and improve the efficiency and predictability of drug development. These systems include cutting-edge technologies such as organoids, microfluidic organ-on-chip platforms, and AI-powered computational models, enabling scientists to replicate human disease with greater precision than traditional research methods.

The initiative aims to address long standing limitations in conventional drug research by enabling earlier and more accurate evaluation of therapeutic effectiveness, thereby accelerating the delivery of innovative treatments to patients. By integrating biological science with artificial intelligence and computational biology, the institute is expected to significantly enhance research productivity and clinical translation.

Commenting on the development, Roche Group CEO Thomas Schinecker stated that the institute has the potential to “make research and development more predictive and more efficient,” highlighting the company’s commitment to transforming the future of medicine. Azad Bonni, Global Head and Director of the Institute of Human Biology, emphasized that the facility will help scientists move beyond traditional models to better predict how new treatments will perform in humans.

The Institute of Human Biology, founded in 2023, is positioned at the intersection of human disease biology, computational science, and translational bioengineering, fostering collaboration between fundamental research and industrial application. The initiative also reflects Roche’s broader strategy to invest in innovative infrastructure that bridges scientific discovery with real world patient outcomes.

With this launch, Roche aims to redefine drug discovery paradigms, reduce reliance on conventional testing methods, and accelerate the development of safer, more effective therapies, further strengthening its leadership in global pharmaceutical innovation.
