The Supreme Court has granted relief to the Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (HIMSR), allowing the institution to proceed with admissions for 150 MBBS seats and 49 postgraduate (PG) medical seats for the 2026-27 academic session. The decision comes as a significant development for medical aspirants seeking admission to the institute and helps avoid disruption to the academic calendar.

The apex court intervened to safeguard the interests of students and ensure that medical education at the institution is not adversely affected while regulatory and administrative issues are addressed. The order enables HIMSR to participate in the ongoing admission process and continue enrolling eligible candidates under the prescribed norms.

Located in New Delhi, HIMSR is a constituent institution of Jamia Hamdard and offers undergraduate and postgraduate medical education across multiple specialties. The institute has emerged as an important contributor to healthcare education and clinical training in the National Capital Region.

Medical education experts note that judicial interventions in admission related matters often aim to balance regulatory compliance with the interests of students, ensuring that seats do not remain vacant and healthcare workforce development is not impacted.

The approval of 150 MBBS seats and 49 PG seats is particularly significant at a time when India is working to expand its medical education capacity. According to government data, the country has witnessed a substantial increase in medical colleges and training seats over the past decade to address the growing demand for doctors and specialists.

Healthcare analysts point out that every additional medical seat contributes to strengthening the future healthcare workforce, particularly as India continues to face rising healthcare demands driven by population growth, ageing demographics, and the increasing burden of chronic diseases.

The Supreme Court’s decision is expected to provide clarity to prospective students and facilitate the smooth conduct of admissions for the upcoming academic year. It also underscores the importance of maintaining continuity in medical education while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

With admissions now permitted, HIMSR is expected to move forward with the counselling and enrollment process in accordance with applicable guidelines for the 2026-27 academic session.
