Union Health Ministry Launches JANANI Digital Platform to Strengthen Maternal and Child Healthcare in India

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched JANANI (Journey of Antenatal, Natal and Neonatal Integrated Care), a nationwide digital platform aimed at transforming maternal and child healthcare tracking through real time monitoring and interoperable digital health records.
The JANANI platform has been designed to create longitudinal digital health records for women during their reproductive years by capturing healthcare service delivery events across antenatal care, childbirth, postnatal care, newborn care, family planning, and home based child healthcare services.
According to the Health Ministry, more than 1.34 crore beneficiaries have already been registered on the platform, making it one of India’s largest digital maternal healthcare tracking systems.
The upgraded digital system replaces and modernizes the existing Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) portal by enabling seamless monitoring of pregnancies, institutional deliveries, immunization schedules, and neonatal healthcare interventions. The platform also introduces QR enabled Mother and Child Health cards, allowing portability of records across healthcare facilities nationwide.
The Ministry stated that JANANI will help healthcare workers ensure continuity of care by sending alerts, reminders, and scheduling support for antenatal visits and immunization milestones, particularly benefiting women in rural and migratory populations.
India has significantly improved maternal healthcare indicators in recent years. According to government estimates, the country’s Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) declined from 130 per lakh live births in 2014-16 to 97 per lakh live births in 2018-20, while institutional deliveries have consistently increased under national healthcare initiatives. The launch of JANANI is expected to further strengthen digital healthcare governance and early intervention systems for mothers and newborns.
Officials said the initiative aligns with the government’s broader Digital Health Mission and aims to ensure that “no mother or child is missed” in the healthcare delivery chain.
