The West Bengal Government has ordered an investigation into allegations that a patient at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital was administered expired saline, raising concerns over patient safety and hospital quality control. The inquiry was announced after the incident came to the attention of the state health department.

State Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee said a detailed report has been sought from the hospital authorities to determine how the alleged lapse occurred and whether established protocols for the storage, inspection and administration of medicines and intravenous fluids were followed. He assured that appropriate corrective measures would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.

The incident has prompted the health department to examine inventory management practices and quality assurance systems at the hospital. Officials are expected to review procurement records, stock monitoring procedures and the handling of medical consumables to identify any gaps in compliance.

Expired intravenous fluids or medicines can compromise patient safety and may lead to adverse health outcomes if administered. Healthcare experts emphasize that hospitals must follow strict protocols for inventory management, including regular stock audits, expiry tracking and timely disposal of expired medical products to prevent such incidents.

Midnapore Medical College and Hospital is one of West Bengal’s major government tertiary care institutions, catering to a large patient population from Paschim Medinipur and neighbouring districts. Experts say robust quality control mechanisms and periodic inspections are essential to ensure safe clinical practices in high volume public healthcare facilities.

The state government’s inquiry underscores its commitment to patient safety and accountability. Health officials said appropriate action will be taken if negligence is established, while measures will be introduced to strengthen quality assurance and prevent similar incidents in government hospitals.
