India’s biopharmaceutical industry is entering a phase in which the growing complexity of scientific innovation is redefining what the ecosystem needs from technology. With the expansion of biologics, biosimilars, peptides, proteins, oligonucleotides and other advanced therapeutic modalities, sophisticated analytical platforms are becoming increasingly important. Yet access to technology alone cannot close the capability gap; the greater challenge is enabling scientists and industry to understand, evaluate and effectively apply these technologies within real development and manufacturing workflows.

 

This context was evident at the BIOPHARMA Summit 2026, powered by Orbitrap and Vanquish, held on August 6–7 in Hyderabad under the theme “Advancing innovation, technology and collaboration.” While the summit brought together scientific and industry stakeholders, the Thermo Fisher Scientific‘s Customer Experience Centre (CEC) and Bioprocess Design Centre (BDC) in Hyderabad offered a closer perspective on how technology infrastructure can contribute to India’s next stage of biopharmaceutical growth.

The significance of the CEC lies in what it enables. The facility provides customers and researchers with direct access to advanced technologies, workflows and application expertise, allowing them to evaluate platforms, gain hands-on experience, and receive technical training and work with Thermo Fisher experts on real-world scientific and manufacturing challenges. Rather than functioning solely as a demonstration facility, the CEC creates an environment where technology can be assessed against practical requirements and where the gap between technical capability and real-world application can be narrowed.

 

This becomes particularly important as biopharmaceutical development grows more analytically demanding. Complex biological molecules generate increasingly sophisticated datasets and require precise decisions around molecular characterization, impurities, structure and process performance. The critical question is therefore not merely whether a laboratory has access to an advanced instrument, but whether its scientific teams can deploy it effectively, interpret the resulting information and translate it into meaningful development decisions.

The BDC complements this capability by bringing a bioprocessing dimension to the Hyderabad ecosystem, supporting engagement across the biopharmaceutical lifecycle from research and development through commercialization. Thermo Fisher has identified three priorities for strengthening India’s life-sciences ecosystem: greater access to world-class technologies, talent development, and improved productivity and time-to-market.


The talent dimension is particularly important. India has a strong scientific base, but continued progress requires closer connections between education, research, technology and industry. Thermo Fisher’s capability-building approach includes approximately 10 partnerships with academic institutions, research organizations and government agencies, including IIT Guwahati, KIIT Odisha, the Atal Incubation Centre and C-CAMP, among others. Such collaborations provide scientists, researchers and industry professionals with practical exposure to advanced technologies and workflows.

The new technologies introduced at the summit further demonstrate this evolution. Thermo Fisher announced the Orbitrap Excedion Mass Spectrometer and Vanquish Amplify UHPLC system. Orbitrap Excedion supports the characterization of complex molecules including proteins, peptides and oligonucleotides, while Vanquish Amplify strengthens analytical capabilities for pharmaceutical research and development. Importantly, the launches were supported by workflow demonstrations and guidance on data analysis and interpretation, highlighting that advanced instrumentation delivers greater value when technology is connected to scientific expertise.

Artificial Intelligence adds another dimension. Thermo Fisher outlined an enterprise-wide AI strategy covering operational efficiency, AI-enabled products and services, and customer experience, with AI increasingly being used to convert complex datasets into meaningful insights and support faster scientific decision-making.


During the media roundtable held alongside the summit, Thermo Fisher leadership also discussed the evolving relationship between technology providers and customers. Customer engagement was described as a two-way learning process, with feedback informing product development, localization strategies and investment priorities. The broader ambition is to move beyond supplying products towards becoming a long-term strategic partner and trusted advisor.

For India, this approach has wider significance. The country’s biopharmaceutical opportunity will require more than sophisticated platforms; it will require an ecosystem capable of absorbing technology, developing expertise, adapting it to local requirements and translating scientific capability into faster and more effective development.

The Hyderabad CEC offers one example of this emerging model. Its value lies not simply in the instruments it houses, but in bringing technology, people, expertise and practical application together. As India moves towards high-value biologics and advanced therapeutic development, such connections could become increasingly important.


Ultimately, the future of Indian biopharma will depend on how effectively technology can move from laboratory capability to scientific knowledge, from knowledge to innovation, and from innovation to patient impact. The CEC represents an important step in that direction—not simply showing scientists what technology can do, but helping them understand what they can do with it.
