The global prevalence of hypertension is high, and treatment of hypertension is the most common reason for clinic visits and for the use of chronic prescription medications. Half of hypertensive individuals do not have adequate blood pressure control, evaluation of hypertension should aim on extent of Target organ damage, any Heart or kidney disease, chronic Pain killer use, oral contraceptives, life style risk factors.
Treatment includes salt restriction, Weight loss, DASH Diet(high in vegetables, fruits, low-fat dairy products, whole grains, poultry, fish, and nuts and low in sweets, sugar-sweetened beverages, and red meats )limit Alcohol intake, Exercise ,Reduce Stress, Anti-hypertensive Drugs.
Special note on Hypertension during this COVID -19 pandemic. Hypertension is a risk factor for Covid -19 patients. Patients receiving angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) should continue treatment with these agents (unless there is an indication for discontinuation such as hyperkalemia or hypotension). There is no evidence that stopping ACE inhibitors or ARBs reduces the severity of COVID-19.
