A new study published in America reveals that not only does frequent exercise treat depression, it also empowers the mind to change, necessary in the adaptation and learning process. The journal ‘Frontiers in Psychiatry’ published these findings.

“Results show how important seemingly simple things like physical activity are in treating and preventing illness like depression,” remarked the study’s leader, Associate Professor Dr Karen Rosenkranz. The study was conducted on a group of 41 people currently seeking treatment for depression from hospital. Such people tend to withdraw and part-take in less physical activity.

Two groups were created of the 41 participants – one of which undertook a three-week exercise routine. The other group took part in a control programme without exercise. The first group were able to overcome a fear of negative experiences, and experience togetherness while also showing a healthier attitude towards challenges.
