Bridging Generations: Mother-Son Duo Conquers Knee Arthritis Together with Robotic Surgery at Kauvery Hospital, Bengaluru

In a remarkable feat, Kauvery Hospitals, Marathahalli, Bengaluru, has successfully conducted a total knee replacement surgery together- a very rare case witnessed in the Indian orthopaedic landscape.

A mother in her late 70s and her son in his 50s, both battling severe knee arthritis, underwent total knee replacement surgeries together in Kauvery Hospital.

This case sheds light on the challenges faced by different generations when dealing with knee arthritis, the importance of early intervention, and the critical role lifestyle modifications play in maintaining joint health.

“While it’s not uncommon for couples to undergo such procedures side by side, this case is particularly unique due to the generational gap between the two patients,” said Dr. Raghu Nagaraj, Director – Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine and Robotic Joint Replacement, Kauvery Hospital, Marathahalli, who has conducted the procedure.

The Challenges of The Mother-Son Duo

The mother presented a fairly typical case of age-related degenerative arthritis. Her knee pain and limited mobility were in line with what is commonly seen in elderly patients, and her surgery was anticipated to restore her ability to move freely and comfortably.

However, the real challenge lay with her son, who, at just 50-years-old, found himself facing the same fate as his mother. Unlike his mother, whose arthritis developed naturally with age, the son’s condition was a result of lifestyle factors.

He was significantly overweight, tipping the scales at nearly 100 kg, and led a largely sedentary life. The combination of excess weight and lack of physical activity had taken a toll on his knees, leading to early-onset arthritis, said Dr. Raghu.

The son experienced terrible pain with his knee joints deteriorating to the point where the bones were grinding against each other— a condition known as ‘bone on bone’ arthritis. For him, the decision to undergo surgery was not just about alleviating pain; it was about reclaiming his quality of life and his ability to work, as his job required long hours of standing and walking.

Why the Hesitation To Go For A Knee Replacement Surgery?

Despite the clear need for surgery, both patients—particularly the son—were initially hesitant to proceed. This hesitation is not uncommon and stems from various misconceptions and fears surrounding knee replacement surgery. Many believe that surgery should be a last resort, something to be delayed as long as possible, out of fear of complications, prolonged recovery, or the misconception that life after surgery might be overly restricted, added Dr. Raghu.

However, delaying the surgery can often lead to further deterioration of the joint, increased pain, and a decline in overall quality of life.

Dr. Raghu highlights, In the son’s case, delaying surgery would have meant continued suffering, further damage to the joint, and potential loss of employment due to his inability to perform his job duties.

Overcoming Hesitation: The Role of Robotic-Assisted Surgery

What ultimately convinced the son to undergo surgery was the introduction of robotic-assisted technology.

Explaining the robotics aided procedure and its benefits, Dr. Raghu said:  “Robotic knee replacement offers several advantages over traditional methods, including greater precision, reduced postoperative pain, and faster recovery times. In this case, the use of robotic technology was particularly crucial for the son, given his younger age and the need for his knee implants to last many years. The precision offered by robotic assistance ensures that the implant is placed with exact accuracy, which is key to its longevity and the patient’s long-term mobility.”

Recovery and the Psychological Impact

Post-surgery, both mother and son experienced rapid recovery, a proof to the benefits of robotic-assisted surgery. Within two weeks, they were walking without support, and in just a month, the son was back to driving and preparing to return to work.

“This swift recovery was facilitated by a unique protocol of zero-day mobilisation, where patients begin walking on the day of the surgery, significantly improving blood flow and reducing the risk of complications like deep vein thrombosis,” explained Dr. Raghu.

Beyond the physical benefits, the psychological impact of the surgery was profound. The son, who had been mocked for his limp, found new confidence in his ability to walk normally. The mother, too, felt rejuvenated, no longer limited by her knees.

“The fact that they underwent surgery together provided emotional and moral support, helping each other through the recovery process,” added Dr. Raghu.

The Importance of Lifestyle Modifications

This case also highlights the importance of lifestyle modifications in both preventing and managing arthritis, according to Dr. Raghu.  He said: “The mother’s generation, characterised by a more active lifestyle, managed to stave off the worst effects of arthritis until much later in life. In contrast, the son’s early onset of arthritis was a direct result of modern sedentary habits and poor dietary choices. Regular exercise, weight management, and a balanced diet are critical in preventing the early onset of arthritis and reducing the need for surgical intervention.”

The story of this mother-son duo is a powerful reminder of the importance of addressing knee problems early, not delaying necessary interventions, and the incredible benefits that modern medical advancements like robotic-assisted surgery can offer.

It also highlights the critical role that lifestyle modifications play in maintaining joint health, ensuring that more people can enjoy their later years without the pain and limitations of arthritis.

As intergenerational cases like this one become more common under the support of adequate infrastructure, advanced technology and expertise of doctors as offered by Kauvery Hospital, they offer valuable lessons on the importance of health, wellness, and the incredible support that family members can provide to one another in times of need.
