Cough Syrup Deaths: Indian Medical Association Condemns Arrest of Doctor in Madhya Pradesh

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has strongly condemned the arrest of a doctor in connection with the recent deaths allegedly linked to contaminated cough syrup in Madhya Pradesh, calling the move “unjustified” and “deeply demoralizing for the medical fraternity.”

In a statement issued on Monday, the IMA expressed concern over the growing trend of holding doctors solely accountable for systemic failures in the pharmaceutical and regulatory chain. The association stated that while it stands firmly for patient safety and ethical practice, “doctors should not be made scapegoats for lapses that are beyond their professional purview.”

“The arrest of a doctor without a proper technical inquiry undermines the morale of the medical community,” said an IMA spokesperson. “Accountability must be established based on evidence and due process, not as a knee-jerk reaction to public outrage. Doctors prescribe medicines based on approved formulations and trusted supply chains — they are not responsible for drug manufacturing or quality control.”

The IMA has called for an independent investigation involving the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and state health authorities to identify the actual source of contamination and ensure that manufacturers, distributors, and regulatory agencies are also held accountable.

The association emphasized that such incidents highlight the urgent need for stricter quality checks, robust pharmacovigilance mechanisms, and clearer lines of accountability within the healthcare ecosystem.

“Patient safety is our highest priority, but justice must be fair and evidence-based,” the IMA reiterated. “Targeting a single doctor without addressing the broader failures of the drug regulatory system will not prevent future tragedies.”

The IMA has urged the Madhya Pradesh government to release the arrested doctor pending a full investigation and to engage with the medical community in strengthening policies that ensure drug safety without compromising the dignity and trust of healthcare professionals.
