The Government of India has launched Phase III of the Biomedical Research Career Programme (BRCP), a ₹1,500 crore initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s biomedical research ecosystem, fostering scientific talent and accelerating healthcare innovation. The programme was unveiled by Union Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh, who described biotechnology as a key driver of India’s future economic and scientific growth.

The initiative will be jointly funded by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Wellcome Trust, with DBT contributing ₹1,000 crore and the UK based Wellcome Trust providing ₹500 crore. The programme seeks to support cutting edge biomedical research, promote translational science and strengthen collaborations between academia, research institutions, healthcare organisations and industry.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Jitendra Singh said biotechnology is poised to become a defining force behind India’s next phase of economic growth and global competitiveness, adding that the country is emerging as a leader in the global biotechnology landscape. He emphasized that sustained investment in research and innovation is critical to developing affordable healthcare technologies and addressing future public health challenges.

The Biomedical Research Career Programme (BRCP) is designed to nurture the next generation of biomedical scientists by supporting career development, interdisciplinary research and innovation in areas such as genomics, precision medicine, infectious diseases, vaccines, diagnostics, digital health and emerging biotechnologies.

The initiative aligns with the government’s BioE3 Policy and the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, which seeks to position India as a global hub for biotechnology, life sciences and health innovation. Healthcare experts believe the programme will strengthen India’s biomedical research capacity, accelerate the development of indigenous technologies and promote faster translation of scientific discoveries into clinical practice.

The ₹1,500 crore investment marks one of India’s largest collaborative funding initiatives in biomedical research and is expected to boost innovation, enhance international research partnerships and reinforce the country’s role in advancing global healthcare solutions.
