Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda has highlighted the remarkable transformation of India’s healthcare landscape, noting that the country has expanded from a single All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi to 23 AIIMS across the nation, symbolizing a new era of accessible and equitable medical education and healthcare delivery.

Speaking at a recent health event, Nadda emphasized that this expansion reflects the government’s strong commitment to strengthening tertiary healthcare infrastructure, ensuring that advanced medical facilities are available beyond metropolitan regions. The establishment of new AIIMS institutes under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) has played a pivotal role in decentralizing healthcare and improving patient outcomes across India.

He noted, “What began as one AIIMS in Delhi has now become a network of 23 premier institutions delivering high-quality medical care, education, and research. This expansion represents our vision of healthcare for all and medical excellence across every region of India.”

The new AIIMS facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, specialized departments, and advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies, catering to both urban and rural populations. Many of them are also emerging as centers of medical innovation and research, contributing to India’s growing global reputation in healthcare and life sciences.

Experts have lauded the initiative for addressing the regional imbalance in healthcare access, while also creating new opportunities in medical education, employment, and skill development.

The expansion of AIIMS institutions stands as a key pillar in India’s journey toward achieving universal health coverage and reflects the government’s long-term strategy of building a resilient, inclusive, and future-ready healthcare ecosystem
