Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda reviewed the implementation of key Central health programmes in Kerala during a high level meeting with state health officials, with discussions focusing on improving healthcare delivery, expanding infrastructure and strengthening regulatory systems across the state.

The review covered the progress of flagship healthcare initiatives, including measures to enhance access to quality medicines, affordable diagnostic services and comprehensive healthcare facilities. The meeting also emphasized the need to strengthen healthcare infrastructure, address human resource requirements and improve service delivery to meet the evolving healthcare needs of the population.

A major focus of the discussions was the expansion of medical education and healthcare workforce capacity, alongside efforts to improve the regulation of drugs, blood banks and food safety systems. Officials also reviewed mechanisms to strengthen public health surveillance and ensure better implementation of healthcare standards across government health institutions.

The meeting aligns with the Centre’s broader objective of strengthening India’s public healthcare system through initiatives such as the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) and the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM). These programmes aim to improve healthcare accessibility, modernize health infrastructure and build a resilient public health ecosystem.

Kerala continues to be recognised for its strong public healthcare system and health indicators, consistently recording among the lowest Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) in the country. Healthcare experts believe that sustained investments in infrastructure, skilled healthcare professionals, digital health technologies and regulatory oversight are essential to maintaining these achievements.

Public health experts welcomed the review, stating that regular monitoring of national health programmes helps identify implementation gaps, improve coordination between the Centre and states and accelerate the delivery of quality healthcare services. They also emphasized that strengthening diagnostics, medicine availability and healthcare infrastructure remains critical for achieving universal health coverage.

The review underscores the Centre’s continued focus on enhancing healthcare delivery in Kerala through improved infrastructure, stronger regulatory mechanisms and expanded access to quality medical services, supporting the broader vision of a more efficient and patient centric healthcare system.
