AIIMS Bibinagar in Telangana has become fully operational after being established with an investment of over ₹1,100 crore, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J. P. Nadda announced during his visit to the premier institute. The Minister also revealed that the institute has secured nearly ₹64 crore in competitive research grants, highlighting its growing contribution to medical research and healthcare innovation.

Addressing faculty, students and healthcare professionals, Nadda said AIIMS Bibinagar has rapidly evolved into a key centre for patient care, medical education and biomedical research since its establishment under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). He noted that the institute is playing an important role in expanding access to advanced tertiary healthcare services for Telangana and neighbouring states.

The Union Minister said the institute’s success in securing ₹64 crore in research funding reflects its strengthening research ecosystem and growing academic capabilities. The grants are expected to support research in priority areas such as clinical medicine, public health, biomedical sciences and healthcare innovation, contributing to evidence based healthcare and indigenous scientific advancement.

Developed with an investment exceeding ₹1,100 crore, AIIMS Bibinagar was established to improve access to affordable tertiary healthcare while addressing regional disparities in medical education and specialist healthcare services. The institute offers modern clinical facilities, undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, super specialty services and advanced research infrastructure.

The Government of India has significantly expanded the AIIMS network over the past decade to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and medical education nationwide. From seven operational AIIMS before 2014, the country now has 23 approved AIIMS, with several institutions already functional and others in various stages of development. The initiative aims to improve access to high quality healthcare while increasing the availability of trained medical professionals across the country.

Healthcare experts welcomed the institute’s progress, stating that strong research capacity is essential for advancing clinical innovation, improving disease management and supporting India’s ambition of becoming a global leader in medical research. They added that competitive research funding enables institutions to develop new diagnostics, therapies and public health solutions tailored to India’s healthcare needs.

The announcement underscores the Centre’s continued investment in strengthening India’s medical education and research ecosystem, with AIIMS Bibinagar emerging as an important hub for advanced healthcare, academic excellence and scientific innovation in southern India.
