Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has reaffirmed India’s commitment to becoming a global leader in healthcare innovation by promoting indigenous research, medical technology and affordable healthcare solutions. Addressing a convocation ceremony in Lucknow, he said the country’s growing capabilities in gene therapy, nuclear medicine, medical devices and digital health are strengthening both national healthcare and India’s contribution to global health.

The Defence Minister said the government’s focus on Atmanirbhar Bharat has accelerated the development of indigenous healthcare technologies while reducing dependence on imports. He highlighted that initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme have boosted domestic manufacturing of medical devices and healthcare technologies, helping Indian companies compete in global markets.

Singh also emphasized the government’s continued investment in medical education, healthcare infrastructure and research, noting that these efforts are expanding access to quality healthcare while building a stronger innovation ecosystem. He said India’s emphasis on affordable and scalable healthcare solutions positions the country to address global health challenges, particularly in low- and middle income nations.

The government has introduced several initiatives to strengthen the healthcare innovation ecosystem, including the PLI Scheme for Medical Devices, establishment of medical device parks, expansion of AIIMS, increased support for biotechnology research and the adoption of digital health through the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).

Healthcare experts believe India’s growing focus on indigenous innovation is transforming the country into a global hub for affordable healthcare technologies. They noted that continued investments in research, advanced manufacturing and academia-industry collaboration will be crucial for advancing precision medicine, diagnostics, medical devices and next generation therapies.

The Defence Minister said India’s vision extends beyond self reliance to becoming a trusted global partner in healthcare innovation by delivering affordable, high quality and technology driven medical solutions that improve patient care both in India and worldwide.
