The Maharashtra Government has approved a ₹300-crore High-Energy Medical Cyclotron Project in Nagpur, marking a major step towards strengthening the state’s nuclear medicine and cancer care infrastructure. The facility is expected to enhance the domestic production of advanced radioisotopes used in PET CT imaging, cancer diagnosis and targeted radionuclide therapies, reducing dependence on distant production centres.

 

The project will be developed on 30 hectares of land at Bhansoli (Kanhi) in Hingna taluka. The total project cost of ₹300 crore will be shared equally between the Medical Education and Drugs Department and the Industries and Mining Department, with each department contributing ₹150 crore.

 

A high energy medical cyclotron is a sophisticated particle accelerator that produces medical radioisotopes, including those used in positron emission tomography (PET) scans and advanced cancer treatments. The facility is expected to improve the availability of short lived isotopes, enabling faster diagnosis and timely treatment of cancer, neurological disorders and cardiovascular diseases across Maharashtra and neighbouring states.

 

Officials said the project will also support medical research, radiopharmaceutical development and specialised training, creating a robust ecosystem for nuclear medicine in central India. The initiative aligns with the state’s broader strategy to expand access to advanced diagnostics while strengthening indigenous healthcare infrastructure.

 

Healthcare experts welcomed the decision, noting that India has a growing demand for nuclear medicine due to the rising burden of cancer and other non communicable diseases. A regional cyclotron facility will help reduce logistics costs, improve isotope availability and enhance patient access to precision diagnostics and targeted therapies.

 

The approval underscores Maharashtra’s commitment to advancing high end medical technology and is expected to position Nagpur as an emerging hub for nuclear medicine, cancer diagnostics and radiopharmaceutical research, benefiting patients, researchers and healthcare institutions across the region.
