Uttar Pradesh and Japan explored new avenues of cooperation in healthcare, medical education, robotics, pharmaceuticals and skilled manpower during the UP-Japan Healthcare and Care Economy Partnership sectoral session held at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan, Lucknow.

Speakers at the session pointed to the potential synergy between Uttar Pradesh’s young workforce and Japan’s advanced technology, suggesting this combination could open up significant opportunities in healthcare for both sides.

State Leadership Highlights UP’s Growth Trajectory

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, who also holds the Medical Health and Medical Education portfolio, said Uttar Pradesh has emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing state economies under the current central and state leadership. He pointed to the state’s vast potential for collaboration with Japan in healthcare and said UP is actively building a favourable investment environment across pharmaceuticals, medical devices, robotics and medical technology.

Pathak added that the UP Promote Pharma Council has been set up specifically to promote the state’s pharmaceutical sector, and that investment proposals have already been received for a dedicated medical devices park in the Yamuna Expressway region.

Interest in a Large-Scale Medical Technology Hub

According to officials, Japanese institutions have expressed interest in robotics, medtech and innovation labs, with discussions underway around developing a medical technology hub spanning roughly 400 acres.

This builds on an earlier agreement between the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) and Medical Excellence Japan (MEJ), signed to advance technology transfer and R&D cooperation in the medical device sector — part of a broader push to attract Japanese investment into the upcoming YEIDA Medical Device Park.

Part of a Broader Push to Position UP as a MedTech Hub

The healthcare session forms part of Uttar Pradesh’s wider strategy to deepen economic and industrial ties with Japan, spanning sectors such as green hydrogen, automobiles, advanced manufacturing and technology, alongside healthcare. The state has separately secured investment commitments worth ₹500 crore from a dozen companies for its Medical Device Park in Greater Noida, alongside partnerships involving DSS & SP India Healthcare aimed at strengthening India’s MedTech manufacturing base.

Officials say the continued engagement between Uttar Pradesh and Japanese industry reflects a shared push to build a more skilled, innovation-driven healthcare and life-sciences ecosystem in the state.
