Kerala is set to establish the Keralam Institute of Organ and Tissue Transplant in Kozhikode within 30 months, Chief Minister V D Satheesan announced. The institute will come up on 20 acres at Chevayur Golf Link Road at a reported cost of ₹271 crore.
The new facility will have 350 beds and 10 operation theatres, bringing organ-transplant related services under one roof.
According to the Chief Minister, this integrated model is expected to reduce treatment costs to around one-third of current expenses. A fully equipped skin disease hospital will also be developed on the same campus at an estimated cost of ₹35 crore.
The institute is planned as a major transplant and research centre, with annual targets of approximately 1,100 corneal, 520 kidney, 50 heart, 40 lung and 120 bone-marrow transplant procedures. Additional plans for liver, pancreas, intestinal and other tissue transplants have also been outlined in Kerala’s broader project documents.
The project is expected to include advanced transplant facilities, research, training and rehabilitation services. Kerala government project documents have previously outlined dedicated transplant research, dialysis, intensive-care and high-dependency facilities as part of the institute’s development.
The initiative comes amid significant demand for organ transplantation. Kerala’s official organ-sharing registry currently lists 2,231 people on the kidney transplant waiting list, as of September 28, 2026.
The institute is expected to strengthen Kerala’s position as a healthcare destination while expanding access to advanced and more affordable organ and tissue transplantation services in the state.
