Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM): Entering Its Next Phase

The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) is entering a new phase of expansion as India shifts its focus from building digital health infrastructure to driving large-scale adoption and utilisation across the healthcare ecosystem. Launched in September 2021, ABDM is designed to create an interoperable, citizen-centric digital health network connecting patients, healthcare professionals, facilities and health records.

ABDM by the Numbers: ABHA Accounts, Facilities and Professionals

As of July 20, 2026, more than 94.87 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHAs) had been created nationwide. The Health Facility Registry had 5.36 lakh registered facilities, while 10.09 lakh healthcare professionals were registered on the Healthcare Professionals Registry, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.  Create Your ABHA

100 Crore Health Records Linked with ABHA

The scale of digital health records has also expanded rapidly. In May 2026, ABDM crossed the milestone of 100 crore health records linked with ABHA accounts, marking a major step towards creating longitudinal digital health records and enabling secure, consent-based information exchange between patients and healthcare providers.

Beyond ABHA: The Full ABDM Digital Health Ecosystem

The mission’s digital infrastructure extends beyond ABHA. Its ecosystem includes the Health Facility Registry (HFR), Healthcare Professionals Registry (HPR), Health Information Exchange and Consent Manager (HIE-CM), Unified Health Interface (UHI) and National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX). Together, these components are intended to enable interoperable health information exchange, digital discovery of healthcare services and more seamless interactions between patients, providers and insurers. Scan and Share: Transforming Everyday Patient Experiences

ABDM is also changing everyday patient experiences. The government’s Scan and Share/Scan and Register functionality has crossed 25 crore digital OPD registrations, with approximately 4 lakh people using the service every day. The QR-based system enables patients to register for outpatient services digitally, helping reduce queues at hospital registration counters.

What’s Next for the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission

With the foundational digital infrastructure now operating at national scale, the next chapter of ABDM is expected to focus on deeper adoption, interoperability, consent-based data exchange and integration of digital health services into routine care. The government has emphasised that maximising utilisation of the existing ecosystem will be critical to turning India’s digital health infrastructure into tangible improvements in accessibility, efficiency and continuity of care.
