Delhi has recorded a sharp rise in H1N1 (swine flu) infections this season, prompting Union Health Minister JP Nadda to convene a high-level review meeting on August 21 with Delhi’s Health Minister and senior officials from both the central and state health departments.

According to health department data, the national capital has logged 1,777 H1N1 cases so far this season — nearly 7.8 times the 229 cases recorded during the same period last year. The city also saw a sudden single-day spike, with 159 new infections reported on August 20 alone.

Delhi Health Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh joined the review, which examined the current epidemiological situation, the preparedness of healthcare facilities, and the availability of diagnostic and treatment infrastructure across the city. The meeting also assessed measures already in place to monitor and contain the spread of the virus.

Officials pointed to Delhi’s humid and variable weather conditions as a contributing factor, noting that such conditions tend to be conducive to the spread of respiratory infections. As part of the review, Nadda also examined national surveillance data and broader trends in influenza-like illness (ILI) across the country, alongside the situation specific to Delhi.

Health authorities have urged residents to maintain basic hygiene practices, avoid self-medication, and seek timely medical advice if flu-like symptoms develop. For context, India recorded 3,320 H1N1 cases and 14 deaths nationwide in 2025, underscoring why health officials are treating the current spike with caution.

The review comes amid growing public concern in Delhi-NCR, with several hospitals across the region reportedly stepping up preparedness to manage a potential rise in cases, including any complications arising from the infection.
