The National Medical Commission NMC has proposed a centralised mechanism to record and track disciplinary action against registered medical practitioners across India. The proposal is part of the draft Registration of Medical Practitioners and Licence to Practice Medicine (Amendment) Regulations, 2026, aimed at strengthening transparency and accountability within the country’s medical registration system. Under the proposed framework, the National Medical Register (NMR) would serve as a central repository for doctors’ registration details and disciplinary orders, including actions such as suspension or removal from medical registers. This could enable disciplinary decisions taken by a State Medical Council or the national regulator to be reflected more consistently across jurisdictions. Telangana

The move is expected to address a key gap in the existing system, where medical practitioners are registered through State Medical Councils while disciplinary proceedings may arise in different states. Centralised tracking could help ensure that regulatory action against a practitioner remains visible across India rather than being confined to a single jurisdiction. Telangana Today

The proposal builds on the NMC’s broader effort to develop the National Medical Register as a unified digital database of registered doctors practising modern medicine in India. The platform is designed to reduce duplication in medical registration records and provide verified information on registered practitioners, including qualifications and registration status. The draft amendment is part of the proposed regulatory framework and would require finalisation through the prescribed process before coming into force. If implemented, the central tracking mechanism could strengthen regulatory oversight, improve coordination between State Medical Councils and national authorities, and provide a more transparent record of disciplinary action within India’s medical profession.
