Our feet are one of the essential body parts that we often take for granted. We rely on them to take steps and to move around. However, improper foot care can lead to severe foot ailments. Diabetics, in particular, need to be more cautious about their foot health, according to several doctors. KIMS Hospital, a renowned hospital in the city, organized an Indian Podiatry Association meeting on Saturday and Sunday. Attended the event as the Chief Guest. Dr. Bollineni Bhaskar Rao, the Chairman and Managing Director of KIMS Hospital, also participated in the meeting.

Dr. Narendranadh Meda, HOD & Senior Consultant Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon, KIMS Hospitals spoke on this occasion. He said, “Foot health problems are prevalent in India, and they can be attributed to various factors such as lifestyle, cultural practices, and environmental conditions. As India is the diabetic capital of the world, people in India are more likely to get diabetic foot ulcers. 15% of diabetics in India get diabetic foot ulcers at some point in their lives. Published researches indicates that approximately one million legs are amputated each year as a result of diabetes-related complications. Of the 62 million diabetics in India, 25% get diabetic foot ulcers; of these, 50% get infected and need to be hospitalized, and 20% need to have their feet amputated. In India, diabetic foot ulcers account for over 80% of all non-traumatic amputations performed each year. In the KIMS podiatric department itself, on average, we come across approximately 30-40 patients with infected diabetic foot ulcers per day.

The main cause of the unfortunate incidents related to foot ulcers among diabetic patients is their lack of understanding about the seriousness and potential consequences of such issues. In response, the medical community has developed a specialized field of research dedicated to maintaining foot health, recognizing its importance.”

He further says that “Podiatry is a specialized branch of medicine that focuses solely on treating health conditions related to our feet, ankles, and sometimes legs. Podiatrists are medical professionals who specialize in treating conditions like fungal infections, corns and calluses, trophic ulcers, flat feet, ingrown toenails, diabetic foot complications, foot deformities, and other occupational hazards. Our podiatry department is led by a team of highly skilled and experienced podiatrists who are committed to delivering exceptional care to patients of all ages. We offer a range of services, from routine foot care and sports injuries to diabetes foot care and complex surgical interventions.
