Healthcare provider IHH Healthcare is targeting an expansion to 10,000 hospital beds in India by 2031, strengthening its presence in one of its key growth markets. The expansion is expected to be driven through capacity additions and continued investment in its Indian healthcare network.

The company currently operates around 6,100 beds across 36 hospitals in 12 Indian states through its Fortis Healthcare and Gleneagles Healthcare India networks. Reaching 10,000 beds by 2031 would represent an expansion of nearly 64% from its current operational capacity.

Expansion Strategy: Brownfield Additions and Acquisitions

The expansion strategy is expected to combine brownfield capacity additions and acquisitions. Fortis plans to add around 400 beds during the current year, supported by capital expenditure of approximately ₹700 crore. Brownfield expansion is expected to be largely funded through internal cash generation, while debt may be used for acquisitions and equity considered for larger transactions.

Investment and Financial Targets

IHH has estimated the investment requirement at approximately US$250,000 per additional bed. The company is also targeting annual revenue growth of over 15% for its India business, while aiming to improve EBITDA margins by around 1.5 percentage points annually from the current 21–22% range.

Building on Earlier Growth Plans

The 2031 target follows IHH’s earlier plan to expand its Indian capacity to around 7,000 beds by 2028, underlining the group’s growing focus on the Indian healthcare market.

Strengthening India’s Private Healthcare Landscape

With hospital infrastructure and demand for specialised care continuing to grow, IHH Healthcare’s expansion is expected to strengthen its footprint across major Indian markets. The planned addition of nearly 3,900 beds could further consolidate the group’s position among India’s largest private healthcare networks while supporting its broader long-term growth strategy.
