A remarkable story of medical expertise and resilience recently unfolded at KIMS Cuddles, Visakhapatnam when a pair of twins arrived at just 27 weeks gestation. Delivering twins at such an early stage is always a high-risk endeavor, but for these tiny fighters, it marked the beginning of a miraculous journey.

Born through a successful vaginal delivery by Dr. Shilpa Reddy, an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, the twins weighed a mere 770 grams and 940 grams respectively. Their premature arrival placed them in immediate need of specialized care. Under the watchful eye of Dr. Nikhil Tenneti, Chief Neonatologist and HOD, and his dedicated team, the twins faced a multitude of challenges.

Both infants required ventilation support at birth, battling hyperglycemia, anemia, and feed intolerance. Each hurdle they overcame was a testament to their inherent strength and the tireless efforts of the medical team. Thankfully, they remained free from major complications like Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) affecting vision, Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and Periventricular Leukomalacia (PVL) causing brain injury, and Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) leading to intestinal failure.

Through personalized treatment plans and round-the-clock care, the twins began to thrive. Their lungs strengthened, their blood sugar stabilized, and their feeding tolerance improved. Most importantly their crucial stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) lasted for a very short time – only 55 and 61 days for each twin – stands as a testament to the team’s dedication and the twins’ fighting spirit.

At the time of discharge, the first twin weighed a healthy 1800 grams, while the second reached a remarkable 2 kilograms. This significant weight gain marked a vital milestone in their journey, highlighting their incredible ability to overcome the odds.
