Recognizing obesity as one of the most pressing public health challenges of modern times, Kamineni Hospitals has launched a dedicated Weight Loss Centre aimed at providing comprehensive, scientific, and personalized obesity management through a multidisciplinary approach. With obesity rates rising rapidly across India and contributing significantly to lifestyle related diseases, the centre seeks to help individuals achieve sustainable weight loss and improve their long term health outcomes.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. B. Sravya, Consultant Endocrinologist, Kamineni Hospitals, emphasized that obesity should be viewed as a chronic disease rather than merely a lifestyle issue. She noted that obesity is closely linked to serious health conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, fatty liver disease, sleep apnea, infertility, osteoarthritis, and certain cancers. She highlighted that even a 5–10 percent reduction in body weight can significantly improve blood sugar levels, blood pressure, cholesterol, sleep quality, and overall well-being. Early diagnosis and timely medical intervention, she said, are crucial in preventing long term complications.
Dr. Bhavani, Senior Consultant Diabetologist, highlighted the growing burden of obesity across the world and in India. She stated that nearly 890 million people worldwide are living with obesity, while more than 250 million adults in India are affected. Childhood and adolescent obesity is also increasing at an alarming rate. She pointed out that Telangana has emerged as a major obesity hotspot, with a large percentage of adults being overweight or obese. Untreated obesity can lead to diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, fatty liver disease, sleep disorders, joint problems, anxiety, and depression, making specialized obesity care the need of the hour.
Dr. D. Srinagavani, HOD & Consultant Physiotherapist, stressed the importance of physical activity in successful weight management. She explained that excess body weight places considerable stress on joints and muscles, often leading to pain, reduced mobility, and further weight gain. Structured exercise programmes help improve mobility, preserve muscle mass, increase metabolism, reduce joint stress, and prevent weight regain. She added that individualized exercise plans, including aerobic conditioning, strength training, and functional mobility training, are essential components of sustainable weight loss.
Ms. B. Santosha, Consultant Dietetics & Nutritionist, emphasized the critical role of Medical Nutrition Therapy in obesity management. She noted that personalized diet plans can effectively help manage obesity and related conditions such as diabetes, fatty liver disease, PCOS, hypertension, and cholesterol disorders. Nutrition, she said, is one of the strongest pillars in achieving and maintaining healthy weight loss, and every patient requires a plan tailored to their medical condition, lifestyle, and dietary habits.
The newly launched Weight Loss Centre at Kamineni Hospitals brings together endocrinologists, diabetologists, nutritionists, physiotherapists, psychologists, genetic specialists, and bariatric experts to provide comprehensive obesity care under one roof. The centre offers detailed obesity assessment, metabolic and genetic risk evaluation, body composition analysis, personalized nutrition counselling, structured exercise programmes, medical management, behavioural support, and long-term follow-up to help patients achieve sustainable weight loss and improved overall health.
