Navi Mumbai : A 40 years old morbidly obese patient weighing 100 kg detected with fatty liver disease which progressed to cirrhosis got a second lease of life at Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai. Team members participated in Surgery Dr Amrut raj, Dr Hirak Pahari, Dr Ambreen Sawant and headed by Dr Vikram Raut, Director- Liver transplantation and HPB surgery performed a successful liver transplant surgery to improve the patient’s quality of life.

The patient, Sanjay Motwani, caterer by profession from Ulhasnagar was on the heavier side due to a sedentary work. His obesity resulted in a fatty liver, which further progressed to liver cirrhosis. His liver functions suddenly worsened in January, 2023; he was presented with severe jaundice and was diagnosed with acute and chronic liver disease. Initially, he was put on medical management but didn’t respond to treatment. Due to his increasing jaundice and coagulopathy, a manifestation of worsening liver functions, Dr Vikram Raut advised liver transplantation to save his life.

Dr Vikram Raut, Director- Liver transplantation and HPB surgery said, “Obesity is the mother of all diseases and leads to higher mortality and morbidity rates in the country. The obesity epidemic is linked to the rising prevalence and severity of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The cases of NAFLD are surging with increasing body mass index (BMI). The main factor behind NAFLD is insulin resistance which happens due to obesity, especially abdominal obesity.  In Sanjay’s case, underlying liver damage was due to fatty liver disease led by obesity. Acute or chronic liver failure is seen in such patients due to the sudden worsening of liver disease with underlying liver damage.  These patients with underlying liver cirrhosis present with severe jaundice, coagulopathy. These patients have a very high risk of mortality up to 60–70% without liver transplantation. So, these patients will need liver transplantation on a semi-urgent basis and waiting is not an option for them.  Sanjay’s father-in-law came forward as a donor. He was evaluated in detail for liver size, quality and anatomy and his right side of liver was used for transplantation.

“My life was miserable as I piled up excess kilos and later got detected with fatty liver disease which was an unknown entity for me. My health kept on worsening and I also suffered from jaundice and cirrhosis. This diagnosis came as a shock for us. My family panicked too as we didn’t know what to do. But, I was fortunate to get life-saving and enhancing treatment at Medicover Hospitals. I thank the team of doctors for performing this transplant with precision and care. I also want to thank my family, especially my father-in-law, who donated his liver to me. I have resumed my daily routine with ease now,” concluded the patient Sanajy Motwani.
