Mumbai, August 21, 2026: World Senior Citizen’s Day is observed every year on August 21st. With India moving towards an ageing society, the conversation surrounding senior citizens should move beyond just caregiving and healthcare to focus more on purpose, social connection, independence and quality of life. The senior citizen population in India is estimated to reach nearly 230 million by 2036, constituting around 15% of the whole population.

A Shift from Care-First to Purpose-Driven Senior Living

Senior living in India is increasingly making a transition from the traditional concept of retirement homes as spaces of care, towards purpose-built communities where the elderly get the chance to live actively and independently, through a socially connected lifestyle and with greater independence and purpose.

Industry Leader’s Perspective on Ageing with Dignity

Sharing his thoughts on the occasion of World Senior Citizen’s Day, Saumyajit Roy, Co-founder & CEO, Emoha Elder Care and Co-founder, Shremoha, shared:

“World Senior Citizen Day is a chance to rethink how we look at ageing. It shouldn’t be treated as a stage of decline; for most seniors today, it’s a stage where they’re still active, still ambitious, and still looking for purpose and connection in their daily lives. As India moves toward becoming an ageing society, there’s a real opportunity here: to build support systems that go beyond basic care and actually give older adults dignity, independence, and a genuine sense of community. What matters in the end isn’t just how long people live, but how well they live — and that’s something families, communities, businesses, and policymakers all have a role in.”

Growing Demand for Premium Senior Housing in Urban India

Recent developments in the senior living sector in India indicate the increasing demand for senior housing in urban regions, such as Shremoha, India’s premium senior independent living platform, a strategic joint venture between Shrem Group and Emoha, a part of Age Care Labs, which announced its first two flagship development partnerships — Kekarav by TRU Realty in Pune and KREEVA in Gurugram — marking its entry into two of India’s fastest-growing markets for premium senior living. The projects are designed for independent seniors who are looking for a premium, active and socially connected lifestyle while having access to hospitality, wellness and support services, evolving with their requirements. Shremoha intends to set up 250 thoughtfully designed residences, setting a new benchmark for independent, active and secure senior living in Pune.

The Bigger Trend: From Care-First to Lifestyle-First Senior Living

One of the major trends shaping senior living in 2026 is the shift from a care-first model to a lifestyle and wellness-focused model.

At present, seniors look for more than medical assistance and accommodation, since they prioritise opportunities for recreation, travel, social interaction, learning, meaningful engagement, valuable connections, and hobbies. Thus, leading senior care operators and developers are striving to create communities that blend residential spaces with wellness programmes, social infrastructure, access to healthcare and hospitality.
