Past 3 years around 348 Children Received New Lease of Life After Successful Congenital Heart Defect Surgery

The Rotary Club of Bombay Airport has undertaken a noble cause to provide free surgeries for 140 children suffering from Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, presented the “Gift of Life” certificate to the children who underwent successful surgery.

Congenital heart defects are one of the most common birth defects in India, affecting approximately 1% of all newborns in the country each year. If left untreated, these conditions can cause serious health complications or death in severe cases. Early diagnosis is key to preventing long-term consequences. However, lack of awareness and insufficient resources have hindered timely diagnosis and treatment for many children.

Mr. Suvendu Mishra, President of the Rotary Club of Bombay Airport Said “Our mission is to make sure that every child receives the necessary medical care regardless of their family’s economic situation. Through this initiative we have operated around 348 children with heart defects in the past 3 years, as the treatments that would have otherwise been inaccessible or unaffordable for many families. This year The Rotary Club of Bombay Airport and 5 Rotary Districts and 9 Clubs with their international clubs have come together to raise Rs. 1.92 Cr funds for the treatment of children suffering from Congenital Heart Disease (CHD). The collective effort from 85 generous donors will be helpful to provide financial assistance for the treatment of 140 children and offer emotional support to their families.”

Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, who has been working closely with the  association, said, “I am committed to raising awareness about congenital heart defects and ensuring that all should have access to quality care. People living in rural areas often have limited resources available for healthcare needs compared to those living in urban environments.”

Mr. C Sreenivas, Chairman, Sri Sathya Sai Health & Education Trust said “CHD is an issue that affects millions of children every year, and the Rotary Club of Bombay Airport is proud to be doing their part to help. Through generous donations from individuals, businesses, and even government organizations, the Rotary Club of Bombay Airport was able to raise enough funds to cover the expenses for these surgeries. The money raised will not only provide medical treatment but also provide financial assistance to families who are struggling to cover medical costs.”
